Felix Rosenqvist waited until the final three seconds of the Firestone Fast Six to take pole for the OnlyBulls Grand Prix of Portland, and when the lap landed it left Alex Palou 0.0184 seconds adrift with no time to answer.
Rosenqvist's 58.4828s in the No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing Honda was his second pole of 2026 and the eighth of his career. It also denied the four-time champion a seventh pole of the season.
"It's a phenomenal team effort," Rosenqvist said. "We just kept tuning on it. I think we started off a little bit behind yesterday and really didn't do anything magical. We just tried to focus on execution and putting all the corners together."
Speaking to motorsport.com's Joey Barnes, he added a note about the car itself: "We have a Grateful Dead car here again as a little gesture to all the fans that wished to have it back, so that's really cool to get a pole with a beautiful car like that."
Palou, who set a 58.5012s and briefly looked to have done enough, took the loss with a shrug.
"I had too much lunch today, man," he joked when asked where the missing tenth had gone. "It's so close. It hurts when it's that close. But happy for Felix, happy for a Honda 1-2 there. Let's see what kind of car we have for the race."
Will Power made it three different teams in the top three, qualifying his No. 26 Andretti Global Honda at 58.5130s. Portland is the Queenslander's best hunting ground — he won it in 2024 and 2025 in his final two full seasons at Team Penske — and he was frustrated to have left a slice of the lap behind.
"On the exit of Turn 7, I had a big spin-up, and I definitely lost a 10th [of a second] there," Power said. "It was still a very nice job by the team today. We had Marcus in the top six and Kyle in the top 12. So we've got good cars and, man, I've been close to pole a few times this year, so I'm getting there. I'm going to get a pole here soon, especially on a road or a street course."
Marcus Ericsson made it an Andretti second row in fourth, a week after signing a contract extension with the team for 2027. Rinus VeeKay was the quickest Chevrolet in fifth for Juncos Hollinger Racing, and Kyffin Simpson took his first Fast Six appearance of the season in sixth.
Honda's grip on the session was close to total: the manufacturer led all three knockout rounds and filled 10 of the first 12 grid slots.
The exception matters. David Malukas, the only other Chevrolet driver inside the top 12, qualified ninth for Team Penske but drops six places for an unapproved engine change at Nashville. He starts Sunday's 110-lap race 83 points behind Palou with six rounds left, and he will do it from 15th, behind third-placed Kyle Kirkwood, who missed the Fast Six by 0.0352s and lines up seventh.
That is the shape of the title fight now. Palou does not need to win from the front row; he needs Malukas to be stuck in traffic at a circuit whose tight opening chicane regularly turns the midfield into a demolition derby on lap one.
Elsewhere in the session, Scott Dixon clipped the inside barrier at Turn 1 in the Round of 12 and picked up significant right-front damage, limping back to the pits and qualifying 12th. Christian Lundgaard, the highest points scorer on natural road courses this season, had a wretched afternoon with mechanical problems and starts 25th.
The race begins at 4pm ET Sunday — 6am AEST Monday for Australian viewers.
