Marquez Completes Sachsenring Sweep as Five-Way Title Fight Erupts

Marc Marquez swept the German Grand Prix weekend at the Sachsenring, equalling Giacomo Agostini record for premier-class wins at one circuit and igniting a MotoGP title fight now separated by just 24 points.

Marquez Completes Sachsenring Sweep as Five-Way Title Fight Erupts

Key Takeaways

  • 1.I'm really happy with this result." The race turned on lap nine when Alex Marquez, running second, crashed at the final corner and scored nothing — a costly error in a championship that has tightened to breaking point.
  • 2.We managed it on a track that suits my style," Marquez said, having controlled the race from the front with a fastest lap of 1m21.088s.
  • 3."I read the word karma since 2015, and I won six world championships after that.

Marc Marquez turned the Sachsenring into a personal fortress once again, leading every lap of the German Grand Prix to complete a flawless weekend of pole, sprint and Grand Prix victory. The Ducati Lenovo rider took the flag 1.996 seconds clear of Ai Ogura after 30 laps, his third Grand Prix win of a 2026 season that had, until Germany, been slipping away from him.

It was Marquez's tenth premier-class win at the circuit, a tally that equals Giacomo Agostini's all-time record for the most top-class victories at a single track.

"The goal for the weekend was to attack to recover points. We managed it on a track that suits my style," Marquez said, having controlled the race from the front with a fastest lap of 1m21.088s.

Behind him, the Trackhouse Aprilias stole the show. Ogura reeled in and passed his team-mate Raul Fernandez in the closing laps to claim second, with Fernandez holding on for a surprise podium in third, 5.104s down.

"Finishing after Marc in second is great. I feel like I did my maximum. We managed the front tyre very well," Ogura said. Fernandez, who had not been expected to feature at the sharp end, added: "Before the race, nobody expected us to fight for the podium. I'm really happy with this result."

The race turned on lap nine when Alex Marquez, running second, crashed at the final corner and scored nothing — a costly error in a championship that has tightened to breaking point.

"I made a small mistake that cost me the race and zero points. Probably I was riding with too much confidence; it ended in the worst possible way," said the younger Marquez.

Pedro Acosta took fourth for KTM ahead of Jorge Martin, whose points-limiting fifth still left the factory Aprilia rider on top of the standings. "We struggled with the front the entire weekend, unable to turn the bike. I managed to keep Pecco at bay, and these are important points," Martin said. Francesco Bagnaia trailed him home in sixth, unable to find a way past on the Sachsenring's narrow racing line.

The weekend was overshadowed by the absence of Marco Bezzecchi, who fractured his left collarbone in a qualifying crash on Saturday and underwent surgery on Sunday morning. The Aprilia rider is targeting a return at Silverstone. Online, some framed the injury as karma, pointing to his clash with Marc Marquez in Indonesia last year and his recent Czech Grand Prix suspension for striking a marshal. Marquez was having none of it.

"I read the word karma since 2015, and I won six world championships after that. So if this is karma, welcome. Karma doesn't exist and all the riders, we are taking a lot of risks out there," he said. He then turned the focus to safety: "One more time — Bezzecchi, Fermin in Assen and me in Indonesia — we got injured when going in the gravel for the step. I hope for a good recovery for Bez, but I hope that for the future, we can fix these things."

The result blows the title race wide open. Martin leads on 208 points, but Ogura (194), Marquez (190), the sidelined Bezzecchi (186) and Fabio Di Giannantonio (184) are all within 24 points of the top — the closest leading five at this stage of a season in the modern MotoGP era. With Bezzecchi facing time on the sidelines and Marquez surging, the second half of 2026 is shaping into a five-way brawl.
