Marquez Eyes Sachsenring History as Fernandez Tops Practice

Raul Fernandez topped opening practice at the Sachsenring, but the focus is on nine-time winner Marc Marquez, second on Friday and one victory from matching Giacomo Agostini's German GP record, as Jorge Martin leads the title race.

Marquez Eyes Sachsenring History as Fernandez Tops Practice

Key Takeaways

  • 1."At Assen we knew from the start that we would have to grit our teeth and suffer, but we still managed to handle the situation and bring home important points for the Championship," he said.
  • 2."We still have margin for improvement, but I'm convinced that we'll soon reach 100%." Di Giannantonio, whose Friday pace backed up a strong season, is relishing the position.
  • 3."We arrive to Germany in third place of the championship, it's a great situation, and for sure we are privileged," said the Italian, 16 points off the lead.

The German Grand Prix weekend opened at the Sachsenring with a familiar name near the top and an unfamiliar one above it. Raul Fernandez put his Trackhouse Aprilia fastest in Friday's opening practice at 1m20.829s, edging the rider who has made this circuit his own: Marc Marquez, second by just 0.051s despite tipping off at the third corner early in the session.

Marquez has won nine premier-class races at the Sachsenring, and a victory on Sunday would carry extra weight, moving him level with Giacomo Agostini's all-time record for German Grand Prix wins. His low-speed crash exiting Turn 3 on his third lap did little to dent that threat. He recovered to head a chasing pack led by Fabio Di Giannantonio's VR46 Ducati, third and 0.107s off the pace on used tyres.

Joan Mir (Honda) and Jack Miller split the leaders in fourth and fifth, with Marquez's brother Alex sixth. The session was messier further down the order. Maverick Vinales was the leading KTM in 11th after his own fall, while Francesco Bagnaia trailed in 19th, nearly a second adrift.

Marquez arrived off a hard-fought Dutch round. "At Assen we knew from the start that we would have to grit our teeth and suffer, but we still managed to handle the situation and bring home important points for the Championship," he said.

At the front of the standings, Jorge Martin carries the momentum. The Aprilia rider leads the title race and likes what the Sachsenring offers. "We are tackling this GP in a good moment, plus I really like the Sachsenring," Martin said. "We still have margin for improvement, but I'm convinced that we'll soon reach 100%."

Di Giannantonio, whose Friday pace backed up a strong season, is relishing the position. "We arrive to Germany in third place of the championship, it's a great situation, and for sure we are privileged," said the Italian, 16 points off the lead.

Not everyone is as comfortable. Bagnaia is still stinging from a retirement at Assen. "The weekend at Assen was complicated, and finishing Sunday with a retirement really disappointed me, especially for the work done with the Team," he said.

For Fabio Quartararo, the Sachsenring at least offers happier memories as Yamaha keeps searching for consistency. "Assen was physically demanding, but we managed to get the maximum from that race," the Frenchman said. "Sachsenring is a track where I've had some great memories, including a win."

The picture will sharpen through qualifying, but Friday underlined the weekend's central question: whether anyone can stop Marquez from adding to a Sachsenring record that already stands apart.
