Marquez Wins Sachsenring Sprint as Bezzecchi Break Reshapes Title Race

Marc Marquez broke the Sachsenring lap record for pole and led an all-Ducati sprint sweep, but the German Grand Prix Saturday was defined by Marco Bezzecchi's Q2 crash and broken collarbone, which ends his weekend and stalls his title bid — and by Marquez publicly rejecting 'karma' claims about his rival's injury.

Marc Marquez turned a record-breaking Saturday at the Sachsenring into a commanding sprint victory, but the day's biggest consequence for the 2026 MotoGP title fight was written in an Aprilia garage that had already been emptied.

Marquez set the tone in qualifying, lapping the German circuit in 1:19.041 to take pole by 0.061 seconds from his brother Alex — a new outright lap record and his ninth pole at the Sachsenring. Fabio Di Giannantonio made it an all-Ducati front row, while championship leader Jorge Martin could manage only ninth on the grid and Fabio Quartararo dragged his Yamaha to a surprise sixth.

The session turned on a crash that had nothing to do with the leaders. Marco Bezzecchi, already reeling from a run of Sunday failures, was thrown from his Aprilia in a highside at Turn 7 during Q2. He walked away, but the damage was done.

"Following the crash, Marco Bezzecchi was taken to the circuit medical centre where, under the supervision of MotoGP Medical Director Dr. Angel Charte, he underwent an X-ray examination which revealed a complete and displaced fracture of the left clavicle," Aprilia said in a statement. "The type of fracture requires surgical intervention for optimal recovery and it will be performed by Dr. Giuseppe Porcellini in Italy."

Bezzecchi was ruled out of the rest of the weekend and flew home for surgery — a fresh blow to a title bid that had already stalled with a third non-score in a Sunday race at Assen.

In the sprint, Marquez simply drove away. He led every lap to beat Alex by 0.368s, with Di Giannantonio completing a Ducati 1-2-3. Ai Ogura and Raul Fernandez salvaged Aprilia's afternoon in fourth and fifth, Martin recovered to sixth, and Francesco Bagnaia could only manage seventh. Franco Morbidelli's race ended in the gravel on lap five. Martin's six points were enough to stretch his championship lead to 11.

Marquez was quick to shut down the narrative that spread on social media after Bezzecchi's crash, where some framed the injury as payback for an earlier clash between the pair in Indonesia.

"I've been reading this word since 2015," Marquez said of the "karma" talk. "And yet, I've won six world championships since then. If that's karma, then so much the better."

He went further in defending his rival. "I had already asked people not to attack Marco after Indonesia, because these things happen in racing," Marquez said. "I hope Bez recovers quickly."

The champion also used his platform to flag a safety concern about the run-off at the Sachsenring. "Today we had yet another problem that we can solve for the future," he said. "We hurt ourselves walking on the gravel because of that step between the asphalt and the bin. I especially hope that we can resolve this problem for the future."

With his brother lining up alongside him for Sunday's grand prix, Marquez was not about to relax. "Alex will be tough tomorrow," he said. "At least he's my brother."
