Legacy Motor Club revealed the full membership of its strategic ownership group on Thursday, and the list reads less like a NASCAR shareholder register than a guest list.
Six-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon, four-time champion Dario Franchitti and 2004 champion Tony Kanaan head the racing contingent. Alongside them: two-time National League MVP Bryce Harper, World Series winner Chase Utley, 11-time surfing world champion Kelly Slater, former world No. 1 Andy Roddick, Grammy winner Darius Rucker, chef Guy Fieri, CrossHarbor Capital Partners co-founder Sam Byrne and Away co-founder Jen Rubio.
By the team's own count the group holds more than 30 championships and major professional titles between them, including five Indianapolis 500 victories.
"This is not a traditional ownership group," said co-owner Jimmie Johnson in the team's release. "It is a collection of people who understand competition, leadership, innovation, storytelling and how enduring organizations are built. They come from different worlds but share a common belief: that LEGACY can become something fundamentally different within motorsports and culture."
Johnson added: "The caliber, diversity and perspective of this group speak directly to where LEGACY is headed."
The open-wheel names carry weight beyond the letterhead. Dixon's 59 wins are second on IndyCar's all-time list and he moves to Arrow McLaren next season after 25 years at Chip Ganassi Racing. Kanaan is Arrow McLaren's team principal. Franchitti won the Indy 500 three times before retiring in 2013. Johnson himself made 29 IndyCar starts with Ganassi and took Rookie of the Year honours at the 2022 Indianapolis 500, and Legacy partnered with Arrow McLaren on Ryan Hunter-Reay's No. 31 entry at this year's race, supplying race strategist Brian Campe and pit crew members.
Rucker and Fieri were announced earlier in the year, and Fieri's stated reason for joining sets out the pitch the team has been making to people outside racing.
"Motorsports and race cars have always had that raw energy I love - the people, the passion, the culture, the speed," Fieri said when his investment was announced in June. "LEGACY MOTOR CLUB is building something different, and I wanted to be part of it. This is about more than racing - it's about creating a brand that connects with fans everywhere, from the track to the table."
The obvious objection is the results column. Legacy has not won a Cup race since rebranding from Petty GMS in 2023, and the announcements about partners, advisers and owners have come at a steadier rate than the on-track gains. Frontstretch, reporting the news, noted the group had been rolled out in instalments over months.
There is movement, though. Erik Jones took the No. 43 to a runner-up finish at Michigan in June and spent the early summer inside the top 16 in points.
"I think we are in a better spot," Jones said before that Michigan weekend. "It's funny, I looked at the points position at this point last year, and we aren't a whole lot different, but I think as a group we are running consistently better. We've had a great stretch here for a month of showing up each week and having good cars and running well."
He was careful about what that actually proves. "I think there are so many little things that we can do better still, which is frustrating but good. To have performance like we are currently having and know there are little things that we need to work on and improve, there is value in that."
"Without question, we will have a third car on the grid next year," Johnson said. "Very excited about that. Our commitment to growth will be able to attract and recruit the right individuals to help come in and really grow the workforce for this third car. All the benefits that come with running an additional car will help speed up our process."
No driver has been named. The No. 84 that Johnson runs part-time is expected to go full-time, with Johnson moving to a part-time No. 13.
Whether a boardroom of champions from other sports translates into speed at Kansas is the open question. Johnson's answer so far has been that Legacy is trying to be more than a race team - which is a reasonable ambition, and also the kind of thing teams say while they wait for a win.
