The richest single payday of NASCAR's regular season went to a driver who never led a lap and finished 24th. That is the strange arithmetic of the In-Season Challenge, and on Sunday it made Todd Gilliland a millionaire.
The Front Row Motorsports driver defied the odds to collect the $1 million prize in the second running of NASCAR's bracket-style tournament, advancing round after round on the narrowest of margins before beating Ryan Blaney in the championship head-to-head at the Brickyard 400. The math was simple in the end: Gilliland finished 24th, Blaney 26th.
Gilliland had spent the build-up insisting his run was built on luck as much as speed.
"We've caught a lot of lucky breaks. We've barely been skating by all these rounds," he said before the race. "But now that we're here, yeah, it feels a bit more real and you never know, right? Four hundred miles, anything can happen."
It nearly did not fall his way. Blaney, the 2023 Cup champion and a Team Penske driver, started ahead of Gilliland and ran in front of him for most of the afternoon. Then, with about 40 laps to go, contact from John Hunter Nemechek's No. 42 spun Blaney in Turn 3 and collected him in a crash that damaged the right side of his car. His crew patched it up and sent him back out, but he could only recover to 26th — two spots behind the man he needed to beat. Nemechek sought Blaney out afterward to apologise and explain what he had seen from his own seat.
Blaney was not entirely won over.
"Well, he apologized and said he messed up," Blaney told Frontstretch. "So, apology is nice. But it still happened and cost us a lot of money."
For Gilliland, the tension of watching it unfold was its own kind of reward.
"It was nerve-wracking. Even though we were 24th and 26th, it was good; it felt good to feel those nerves, like someone chasing you down for something meaningful," he said. "Seemed like we just barely skated by every single round. We weren't great today, but we made the most of it."
The result caps a tournament that has quickly become NASCAR's most talked-about summer wrinkle, rewarding consistency and survival over raw pace. Blaney, whose streak of consecutive top-11 finishes ended at 11 on the same day, was left to rue how a single hit erased a seven-figure opportunity. Gilliland, meanwhile, was left doing the happier maths.
"This is something to celebrate," he said. "We'll figure out something to do with $1 million bucks."
