George Russell's Belgian Grand Prix lasted barely two laps. What ended it was not a mistake - it was a battery that stopped doing its job at the worst possible moment on the worst possible circuit.
Russell launched well from the second row and ran behind Max Verstappen through La Source. Then the power went.
"I got to the top of Eau Rouge with 0% on the battery," he told Crash.net. "But for whatever reason, the battery decided not to recharge at turn one."
On the Kemmel Straight, a car carrying a reported 35 per cent power deficit is a moving obstacle. Russell was consumed.
"I just got totally swallowed up down the straight," he said in comments carried by Sky Sports. "I lost three positions down the straight down into Turn Five."
The contact with Lewis Hamilton at Les Combes followed, spinning Russell into the gravel and bringing out the safety car. Hamilton took a five-second penalty for it. Russell refused to point at his compatriot.
"The incident with Lewis, honestly, I think was a racing incident," Russell told Crash.net. "He didn't do it on purpose. He was more to blame than I, but he didn't do anything reckless."
His anger sat elsewhere.
"I got swamped by three cars. I shouldn't have been in that position in the first place, and that's why I'm most angry."
He also flagged the safety dimension of losing that much power mid-pack, describing the moment as "quite frankly, it was dangerous, you know."
Toto Wolff did not hide behind it. The Mercedes boss confirmed the problem was not isolated to Russell's car.
"We had an issue on all Mercedes engines that we lacked the power out on the straights," Wolff said. "That hit him badly and it 100 per cent goes on us."
Wolff's framing of the season is a team that has built something quick and cannot keep it running.
"We came out with a product that is so strong and I'd rather fix the reliability," he said, acknowledging the double cost: "We lost a lot of constructors' points and George's drivers' points."
The irony is that the sister car won the race. Kimi Antonelli took his sixth victory of 2026, reeling in Charles Leclerc with ten laps left after a virtual safety car had shuffled Ferrari to the front.
"It's great to be back on the top step after obviously a few difficult rounds," Antonelli said. "Was a hard-fought race. We lost first place with a VSC but then we managed to make our way back. Was a tough win because Charles was quick and we had to hold onto that."
The championship maths is now uncomfortable for Russell. Sky Sports put the gap to his own team-mate at 50 points.
What makes it grating is the repetition. Asked whether this was the same failure he had seen before, Russell was blunt.
"No, this time, something totally different, but it's every race, you know."
Then the line that says most about where his season has gone: "I'm numb to the disappointment now. When it happens so often, you just get used to it."
Same garage, same engine, two drivers 50 points apart. Mercedes has the pace to win this title. Whether it has the reliability to give Russell a share of it is now a genuinely open question.
