Nissan has confirmed Andretti Formula E as its customer team for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship's GEN4 era, a multi-year agreement that begins with Season 13 in 2026/27. The announcement landed on Friday, hours before Nissan's home doubleheader at the Tokyo E-Prix, and pairs two of the grid's most established operations for the championship's next technical chapter.
The deal ends Andretti's alliance with Porsche, which the American team confirmed in May would conclude at the close of the current season. That partnership, running since 2022/23, delivered Jake Dennis the 2023 drivers' title — making him the first British Formula E World Champion — and has Porsche leading the manufacturers' standings with four rounds still to run.
For Nissan, Andretti is only the second customer team in its Formula E history. McLaren ran Nissan power for three Gen3 seasons before leaving the series at the end of last year, a departure that left Nissan without a customer — and without the extra development data one brings — for the final Gen3 campaign. That gap disappears for Gen4.
"We're delighted to welcome Andretti Formula E as our customer team for the GEN4 era," said Tommaso Volpe, Nissan's team principal and managing director. "Formula E is an increasingly competitive championship, and having a strong partner is an important part of maximising both performance and technical development. Andretti is one of the most successful names in motorsport, where it has established itself as one of the leading teams, consistently competing at the front and securing a drivers' world championship."
Nissan arrives at the switch on the back of its own title, Oliver Rowland having won the 2025 crown. Since entering in Season 5, the manufacturer has taken nine race wins, 34 podiums and 14 pole positions.
Roger Griffiths, team principal of Andretti Formula E, framed the move as a natural fit. "As an early pioneer of electric vehicles, Nissan has developed vast knowledge in this category and through their time in Formula E have shown how immensely competitive they can be," he said. "It's these characteristics that align so well with the approach of Andretti Formula E and why we are extremely proud to be aligned with the Japanese manufacturer entering the highly anticipated GEN4 era."
Nissan chief performance officer Guillaume Cartier tied the tie-up to the company's road-car direction. "Formula E continues to play an important role within Nissan's global electrification strategy," he said. "We look forward to leveraging each other's expertise to achieve success on and off the track."
Andretti has already locked in its Season 13 line-up. Dennis stays on under a multi-year extension and is joined by Felipe Drugovich, who scored his maiden Formula E podium for the team at this year's Monaco E-Prix and enters his second full campaign.
The timing is deliberate. Nissan's Tokyo home race this weekend doubles as the backdrop for the reveal, and Andretti will run a one-off Liberty Walk-inspired livery across the doubleheader — a nod to Japanese car culture and to the manufacturer whose power it will carry from next year.
