Key Takeaways

  • 1."IndyCar features the most competitive and action-packed racing on the planet, challenging drivers at every turn with incredible speeds and demanding layouts," said Alex Damron, IndyCar's chief marketing officer.
  • 2."It's an honor to work with a team that has developed such amazing products to help deliver INDYCAR's first dedicated title in quite some time.
  • 3.2027 can't come soon enough." For IndyCar, the tie-up with iRacing is as much about credibility as reach.

IndyCar's long wait for a video game of its own will stretch a little longer. iRacing and IndyCar have confirmed that their standalone title, INDYCAR Racing: The Game, will now arrive in early 2027 rather than this year, timed to land in the countdown to the 111th Running of the Indianapolis 500.

The game, developed by iRacing Studios on the same simulation engine that underpins the company's PC platform, will be the series' first dedicated title in more than two decades. IndyCar has not had an officially licensed game since the early 2000s, and a previous attempt through a partnership with Motorsport Games collapsed after stalling in development. This announcement, which locked in the game's name, logo and launch plan, is meant to draw a line under that false start.

It will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC via Steam, with the developers promising a hyper-realistic recreation of the series' mix of superspeedways, road courses and street circuits, with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway chief among them.

"This is a project our team has been passionate about for a long time," said Tony Gardner, president of iRacing. "We're bringing everything we know about authentic, immersive racing to consoles and PC, and creating an experience worthy of the INDYCAR name. 2027 can't come soon enough."

For IndyCar, the tie-up with iRacing is as much about credibility as reach. iRacing is widely regarded as the benchmark in racing simulation, and the series is banking on that reputation to avoid a repeat of past disappointments.

"IndyCar features the most competitive and action-packed racing on the planet, challenging drivers at every turn with incredible speeds and demanding layouts," said Alex Damron, IndyCar's chief marketing officer. "Our new video game is going to capture the energy and drama of our sport with hyper-realism, bringing our series to a new generation of gamers. Partnering with iRacing, the gold standard in racing simulation, ensures this will be a truly special new chapter in our gaming history."

"I'm thrilled to be a part of the development process for iRacing Studios' new INDYCAR title," McLaughlin said. "It's an honor to work with a team that has developed such amazing products to help deliver INDYCAR's first dedicated title in quite some time. It's already an exciting time to be an INDYCAR fan for so many reasons, and this game will take the fans' at-home driving experience to the next level!"

The extra runway carries obvious risk given the sport's history with unfulfilled gaming promises, but it also buys iRacing time to launch alongside its natural marketing peak, the build-up to Indianapolis in May. Modes, car and track lists, and pre-order details are due in the months ahead.
