No rider had ever lapped Silverstone in under 1m57s. On Friday afternoon eight of them went under the old record, and the man who ended the day on top had not sat on a MotoGP bike in almost a month.
Marco Bezzecchi's 1m56.280s in Practice for the British Grand Prix was 0.953s quicker than Fabio Quartararo's 2025 pole benchmark, and it landed on an afternoon when Aprilia filled four of the top five places. Raul Fernandez was second for Trackhouse at 0.335s, championship leader Jorge Martin fourth, and Ai Ogura fifth after becoming the first rider in history to break the 1m57s barrier with a 1m56.810s. Fabio Di Giannantonio's VR46 Ducati, third, was the only machine to split them.
For Bezzecchi the lap was defiance more than form. He crashed in qualifying at the Sachsenring in July and spent the summer break under the surgeon's knife twice, on a fractured collarbone and a deep knee wound.
"The day was fantastic. Obviously, I'm very happy to make a good lap time. But let's say the balance of the day is a little bit different than this," he said. "Because in terms of pace, I'm struggling a bit more. When I have to put four, five laps in a row I suffer and at the end of the session I was super tired."
The collarbone took the headlines. It is the knee that is wrecking him.
"The knee looks like a smaller injury, but at the end it's what is making me crazy," he told Crash.net. "The days at home were a disaster. So I'm forcing a bit, especially in the change of direction. I can't bend all the leg, so I'm struggling. And in this track there are many changes of direction!"
Speaking to Motorsport.com, the 27-year-old described a recovery that unravelled after he left Germany. "In Germany they closed it to allow me to fly. But I had to re-open and when they re-opened they showed that I also scratched my bone," he said. "At home, it was difficult during this break to switch off. It was impossible because I went to the gym on Monday and I had the surgery on Sunday. So, I did everything I could to try to come back here. And it was not easy."
He was careful about what a Friday is actually worth. "At least for one day I have the track record. Hopefully it will last for tomorrow."
Behind him, Martin's afternoon mattered for a different reason. The championship leader has been chasing front-end confidence since a crash-strewn Barcelona weekend, and he arrived at Silverstone having reverted his set-up to an earlier base.
"For sure it improved quite a lot," Martin said. "We were looking a lot into the data of what was working in the first part of the season and we went back to that base, what we thought was the best option also for Silverstone, and it worked really good."
He knew inside a lap. "I'm a really sensitive rider, even sometimes if they change me 1mm of height I feel it straight away out of the box. So, today straight away I felt super-strong, super-good with the front. I think also it was a bit of a mental switch: I said 'Okay, the bike is good in the front, I can attack', and I felt like this."
Ducati had no answer. Reigning champion Marc Marquez was sixth, 0.733s adrift, and made no attempt to dress it up.
"It was a day that we already expected," Marquez said. "Looks like here normally Aprilia, for the flowing corners, it's normally the strongest point of that bike, especially like Assen or here. We are working well, trying to find the best, and at the moment we are far from the podium; closer to the top five, but even I'm not in the top five."
Asked whether he could adapt, he pointed at thirteen years of evidence. "My riding style, since 2013, I'm struggling in the same circuits and I'm strong in the same ones. So, in those flowing corners is where I struggle. It's the character of the rider. At 33 years old, I can adapt a bit, but my riding style is my riding style."
Bezzecchi starts Saturday's sprint third in the standings, 22 points behind his own team-mate. He scored 13 points across the four rounds before the break. On this evidence Aprilia's problem this weekend is not finding speed, it is deciding which of its riders gets to use it.
