Pedro Acosta has finally spelled out why he tore up a factory KTM contract to join Ducati for 2027 — and the answer is impatience. At 22, and still without the machinery to fight for a MotoGP title, the Spaniard decided he could not wait for the Austrian brand any longer.
"Things come like that. I already said when I signed my factory contract, that the only thing that I wanted was a bike to win the championship," Acosta said. "It is clear that this bike has not arrived yet."
The move pairs him with reigning benchmark Marc Marquez in a Ducati factory line-up that is already being billed as a superteam, and Acosta made no apology for chasing it.
"To be honest, I have no more time to lose," he said. "I got a lot of experience in KTM, but also I was feeling that [Ducati] was the challenge that I needed for my career."
Ducati general manager Gigi Dall'Igna framed the signing as the natural next step after locking in Marquez.
"Pedro represents the ideal candidate for the future of the team," Dall'Igna said. "After Marc's confirmation, we wanted to add a young and fast rider to the Desmosedici GP development project. Pedro, in addition to being an undisputed talent, has demonstrated extraordinary precocity."
At KTM, losing the rider it had groomed since the Red Bull Rookies Cup stung. Motorsport director Pit Beirer admitted the exit was hard to accept before insisting the project would carry on.
"It's no secret. I mean, we had to swallow that Pedro wants to leave us, because he's been with us so long," Beirer said, running through Acosta's Moto3 and Moto2 titles and his comeback from a broken leg. "There was one moment it was ... quite frustrating, honestly, because we never planned for the replacement. But as always, life goes on."
"Both Alex and Fabio [are] boys with amazing skills for MotoGP. What they can do is proven on track," Beirer said. "We feel this 850 is a perfect restart for KTM."
The reshuffle underlines how thoroughly Ducati's dominance has reordered the grid. The manufacturer that could not keep its brightest young star is now betting on two established race-winners and a clean-sheet rulebook to close the gap — while the star himself gambles that a title shot at Ducati is worth more than loyalty at KTM.
